Very new to the game. What are action points former and is there any way to recover them other than sleeping?

Action Points are consumed when you take action during combat

~ the weapon you equip shows how much AP a single attack costs
~ using an item costs 5 AP
~ choosing to flee costs 6 AP (but can be lowered with proper gear)

a round of battle is over when you run out of AP

when the new round starts (after the enemies turn) you will have full AP

OK, I would assume I'm just going to "fast" in combat. I should pay more attention to what the game is telling me.

That is always a good idea, but just make sure you don't do it in replace of paying attention to the love ones in your life. See the A.T.A thread.
