Where do I start the dark protector quest? Are there any prerequisites before I start it e.g faction choices?

I've done I have it in me and got rid of the worms but don't know how to start the dark protector

Have you returned to the researcher in the cave? (Forgot his name)
And have you stepped onto the Lich's remains?

Won't let me back in the cave? Why?

This cave is a dead end.
I thought you want to do the dark protector quest.
The Allaceph Cave is east of Loneford.

You have to step onto the Lich's remains to find it.
