[Unofficial] IRC channel for AT

How come we don't have an IRC channel. We should take #andorstrail on freenode and start hanging out there...

I'll make a poll

IRC can be logged so that we don't lose anything...

I like the idea of google hangouts, especially since the privacy options are easier to manage than facebook, but I simply refuse to use social networking....

If you are on a computer, you can use this address
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#andorstrail
It opens up a web interface for the IRC channel
Thanks to funfood for that info

If you want a native android app, go to the play store and search for IRC. There's quite a few apps.
I use andchat but I recommend that you try out a few apps and decide which one you like.

Address: chat.freenode.org
Port: 6667
SSL: No
Channel: #andorstrail
Encoding: UTF-8

Thanks to firenaq for pointing that out

There we go. You might need this information if you are using an android IRC client. Use the address and port to connect to freenode if your IRC client doesnt automatically configure freenode
Then use
/join #andorstrail to connect to channel

That's it.!
Use
/Nick <nickname> to change your Nickname

So we two are at the moment the only ones there ;)

Here is a link to the webchat: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#andorstrail

Or join the channel with an IRC client on network freenode, channel #andorstrail

Huh? What do you mean. This is one of the most oldschoolest of chat rooms.

Anyway, what I was thinking was that while google hang outs and the like are good for meetings, IRC serves better for a real time casual discussion.

Now, the most frequent argument I get against the IRC is that people want all information to he on the forums.

I disagree here. There are somethings that you can do in a realtime conversation that you can't do that well on forums. And no one is under the impression that what is said on IRC is permanent. IRC serves as a place for fleshing out your ideas before posting them. Also, consider this a casual discussion on IRC may through a new insight into a certain part of the game, letting you actually post something very useful on the forums. Another purpose for the IRC is to goof off. Something that you don't want to flood the forums with.

The point is that the IRC is in no way meant to be a replacement for the forums. Rather, it is meant to be complementary to the forums.

Before I forget, the IRC is an excellent place for devs to exchange notes quickly. Becomes a lot more useful when more devs get on board. A lot of open source projects do have IRC in addition to traditional forums, wiki and bug Trac.

So, what do you people think? I think it is both useful and fun!
