Pretty simple. My understanding is that the world map is rendered in HTML. If that is the case, then a simple Javascript and a couple of CSS classes can generate the pulsating x

Yes. Every color has a hex code that the css class can use to set the color attribute of the x.

I'd say all it takes is an animated GIF instead of the current X image....

Takes about 5 minutes of gimp... I'll try it tomorrow.

I just wanted to suggest the same
A simple red/white blinking X should do it.

Can it be made so the color of the X is a prefference? I feel like that would resolve the color issue.

Not if they implement this by using an animated gif unless they create a few versions of the file and restrict the options to those few gifs. Say red&white, red&blue...etc

No, no, you misunderstand, or well , I misstated, It doesn't matter 8-).... I meant instead of the animation (pulsing/blinking) would it not be easier to just add X color to prefferences. I didn't mean both, imo, that would be utter overkill.

Either way I think it will be a huge improvment,

Red against a reddish background is hard to see even if you are not color blind. One option would be to average the local pixels, and then make the X the inverse color. Unfortunately, the inverse pf red is green, so that will not solve the problem for those that are color blind. Another option would be to make the X blink by alternating between two colors, say red an yellow. I expect that is a lot of work to implement though. So a third possibility might be something like this:

I made the one on the right especially for Pyrizzle

Pyro's return made me think of this again. The red X is kind of hard to see sometimes, even for those without color blindness. It could be improved, even if not made perfect, by simply replacing the red X with something else. For the amount of work, a cheap upgrade for the next release?
