Female character choice??

I know this has been asked a lot over the years.
Just wanted to see if we had made any developments? I found some free 32x32 pixels of female characters available that with a little tweaking could suit.
Unfortunately that's not a skill I possess lol
Just wondering if anyone's already progressed past a basic design so far?

That's pretty good. Apart from the boxing glove, which I dislike ever more every time this comes up.

Like I said nice job. Like how they match and the little bikini top is cute. The mullet doo rocks!!
I'd be more than happy to have her in the game

For about a year I thought it was a lobster
Can we have a vote to get the glove off? :D

I'd love a female character.
I love nyktos' sprite.
I don't like the boxing glove either.
But.... There's a huge problem.
Dialogues and translation. Not only do we need alternative dialogues on many occasions in English, but there are technical hurdles for translation for which I see no solutions. As an example, "You are nice" translates to "Tu es gentil" or "Tu es gentille" in French, depending on whether "you" is a boy or a girl. Our translation system makes a simple lookup from the English sentence, and we cannot change that system or we lose weblate compatibility....... Talk about a nightmare.

The English could be fixed to be gender neutral everywhere, although that would probably be a lot of work. The only thing I can suggest for translations where that is not possible would be to make the female sprite unavailable.

Wouldn't work either. Saves and translations are unrelated. Translations are just a cosmetic change, like a layer of make-up over the English game. The character sprite is embedded in the save (yes, it already is, although there's only one "choice").
We could decide to go the lazy way, by using the "Arya Stark" way: it's a girl, but everyone (including her dad) think it's a boy.

Read this article for an example of how nightmarish localization can get: http://search.cpan.org/dist/Locale-Make ... pen_To_You

Alright, I've given it some more brain juice. And this is post #1234 from yours truly.

I could imagine adding a new language, "english for girls". Or rather, a whole new set of languages, "french for girls", "russian for girls"...
If the player plays a girl, the translation system will look for the the feminine version of the translation first, fallback to the general translation if none is found, fallback to feminine english if none is found, and finally fallback to raw english.
American girls will also enjoy what people around the world has been enjoying for years in AT: untranslated strings that look awkward.
Hopefully, we'll also gather a whole army of feminist translator that'll make sure girls get it their way too, with proper grammar! (As a father of two girls, I'd love to see them play AT the girls' way.)

I'll have to check with the weblate guy if that would be easily supported there too.
