Having more people testing and bug reporting might help in getting new versions released quicker.

Is there a way to download the current dev version?

Well, you can download the current dev source code, and build a dev version from it.
Dev builds are not public as the saves they produce cannot be loaded in a release version. The contrary is false (release saves work with dev version).
Once we have everything included we will post a beta version for testing.

Like Kevin said, the current dev build hasn't been shared with the public unless we had a look at the content ourselves. We need to make it stable at first before you players can test it.
But we definitely want to share a beta version with you. I hope this will be soon. :) The forum readers should definitely be rewarded for signing up. After you have tested the beta version, the others on Google Play will be able to download the initial release.

I would like to sign up to be a beta tester. What do I do to be able to do this?

There's no need to sign up. When the beta is ready, I'll post a link in the forums.
In the meantime, you can test the current dev version by building it yourself from my github repo. Check the contribution guide for guidance viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4560

I am completely ignorant regarding git and how to put anything together and compile an app file for Android. I knew something of C almost 20 years ago and spent the last 14 years in prison with no phone or computer access. Believe it or not, AT comes on one of the tablets available to inmates from a company called Walkenhorst's and AT is very popular amongst the inmates. Well, the California inmates anyway. My question is: Is there any way to put a current beta version together as the work progresses for those willing to try these betas out, at their own risk, of course.

Hello spbear and welcome to the forums.

I'm glad to learn that AT can give some happiness or fun in the difficult life of the California inmates.
The current state is not that of a Beta, not even alpha for that matter. There are no without names, shops without a merchant... moreover, it's not that it crashes, but it does brake saves if you save your game (unusable in release versions).

Building yourself a test version is not difficult if you have a PC as every steps are given in the contribution guide linked in my post above.

When a Beta is ready, it'll be publicly released here on the forums.
