But there are creatures that live off of chemical energy, not just stuff that is down the food chain from photosynthesis.

Lady Drager wrote:But shadow and darkness are technically the same thing.

I disagree. Darkness just means an absence of light. A shadow is a darker area caused by an object getting in the way of the light. So you can't have a shadow without light.
Lady Drager wrote:Ace, life can indeed exist without light, or have you never learned of the creatures living below ground or beneath the sea where the light never goes?
Indeed. http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/bl ... nts_seeps/

extremophiles exist in all kinds of strange environments where we would usually assume no life could survive

Like highly acidic underground caves & hydrothermal vents.

They are quite interesting

Extremophiles are interesting, but many of them are still down the food chain from photosynthesis, even if they live in total darkness. There are fish at the bottom of the ocean that feed on whatever drifts down from above. Even half a mile or more underground in rocks! (http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20151124 ... nderground)

I love tardigrades! What freaking weird lil organism that is ridiculously equipped to deal with nearly every situation that it comes across.

Yes, many extremophiles simply digest organic detritus that descends from photosynthesis, and a few even are phototrophs themselves. But there some that get chemical energy directly from mineral sources, with no dependence on the sun.
