when you're really weak...
getting smacked from behind a tree can be a tragedy.

i have started this game over & again - more than most would, just testing stuff out...
i always end up where i shouldn't be, pushing a low Lv character

i just can't keep myself from going too far into the next map! (high yielding quest? YES!)
especially, when you know --- you love grinding, but you just don't feel like it anymore?
you make bad decisions & go farther than you told yourself you would.

i think i may have found an advantage....

Yeah, but sometimes it covers my character so I don't know if I'm missing some Item, sheets of paper or even if I should slow down and wait for the gaggle of monsters under my thumb to disperse so I'm not taking on more than my HP can handle! (because I couldn't see them there)

i only use the D-Pad when im grinding,
i keep the settings to where i can "tap to minimize" it when stuff gets "too close"

because, like you said, it gets in the way...
the only reason i play like this (at times)
is so i don't have to keep tapping for every hit...

just keeping your finger on the pad (screen) keeps the hits scrolling fast.
[playing with no warnings or animations either]

that's how i'm grinding for a RoLS right now...
i am getting hit first less often.

i almost want to set up a test,
so that these values might get tweaked...

i get hit less using the D_Pad?
NO WAY?!

Sometimes it freezes on me, but I believe its because my fingertips sweat after a while.

yeah, it will stick on me too... i'll just slightly move my finger, keeping it on the screen & d-pad to keep things moving. i really want to say that it was smoother before we introduced "smart mob movement". but it's been ages & it wasn't a big enough deal to bring up.

i can't use the pad for very long, though...
it feels too clunky & harder (for me) to hit moving targets.
but, a lot of people swear by it.

I do that too. Or I'll just slide my finger over to a different part of the pad.

So in short, the best way to get gold early on is to fight, collect meat, then fight some more! When you get tired of that, sell your meat and fight some more!

Meat sells at 25 gold each.

Though in the church catacombs, some monsters drop Leather Gloves which sells for 111 gold each... but those drops are not as plentiful.

there are a couple of really easy quests you can trigger early in the game the grant decent XP rewards...
like getting that book back in the second town? i do that one really early...
some of these quests can give 2+ levels if done early enough!
