OUYA (oh-yeah?) The New Android-based Console

a lot of big companies are losing their mid to low level game developers to Android...
In some cases, even the best have jumped ship.
but, something funny is happening...

There is going to be a CONSOLE made for Android Games.

This is exciting, but unfortunately I think it's gonna FLOP & bad.

uhm - root the console = duh?

anyone else hear about this thing?

$100~$200 - not bad, if it can pull its weight,
but I don't think it will have enough "armor" to last...

that, AND... low prices = low profits = low desirability for decent sized developers.

BUT - if they can pull this off,
it may just be the next big thing in gaming!
(or the next big joke)

i want it to succeed & do so legitimately...
but I don't see it happening.

opinions?

:D

Hah! Flop. I bet. I'll have to read more into it, but I don't think it will be anything special unless they really devote a lot of time to it and be very wise\innovative with their design choices. Many consoles have come and go..

I already own this device. It is used strictly for playing Android games and running the battery down by my wife...it's my tablet...LOL

Seriously though I think if people wanted to dish out money on a new system they would do so for one of the larger brands. I think the reason Android boomed with such popularity was the fact that it is portable and you can have it on your phone.

It was on Kickstarter and at $99 it is a great alternative to media streamers like Roku, WD, AppleTV, etc. Which are all similarly priced. Plus open-source ftw!

read a review about this recently. sounds interesting. time will tell though.

for those interested here are some stats of the device...

Console
● Tegra 3 -- Quad-core processor
● 1 GB LPDDR2 RAM
● 8 GB on-board flash
● HDMI connection to the TV at 1080p HD
● WiFi 802.11bgn
● Bluetooth LE 4.0
● Enclosure opens with standard screws

Controller
● Wireless controller with 2.4Ghz RF
● Standard game controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button)
● Touchpad, for porting mobile games more easily
● 2x AA batteries
● Enclosure opens with standard screws

OS and software
● Android 4.0
● Custom TV UI
●Integrated custom game store -- find and download games (and other apps)
● Includes SDK for game development
● Ability to root device without voiding warranty

also, it is open to any developer looking to publish a game. The developers also set pricing; the one catch is that every game must have a free portion available, whether through a demo or free-to-play model. The console also supports other Android apps, such as TwitchTV, which comes included.

Everybody is talking about the switch to free to play console games and the end of blockbusters. I think people enjoy casual games a lot, and they don't need state of the art 3D graphics. Look at Andors Trail: It is a great game, and it runs on any smartphone. The question is if publishers will develop for it. I don't think they will introduce their triple A games.
