World map alignment

I'm having an issue with trying to properly align some existing maps. Some versions of the world map I see, including the new in game maps, put a blank tile buffer between maps, while others make them contiguous. However, there are places where one path takes two large maps, while a parallel path takes three small ones. Whether those paths align correctly at the end then depends on whether you count the buffers or not.
Which way is correct? I don't want to guess and then have to rework or undo changes...
