Trouble is I can't get into the first part of the maze because I can't get past the Forest Guardian, who just keeps saying I don't know the password. Seen but he doesn't appear to be helping>?

There's a whole quest line (actually, the main quest line) to follow in order to get to the right discussion... You need to make sure you advance in all the quests still opened in your quest log. Check it out, and see what you can accomplish.

If you already talked to ogam in Vilegard,
After you do that you can enter the maze and also get some sweet sweet xp.

I had missed out the Thieves Guild bit, and hence talking to Ogam wasn't working
