I think $gold would be of little use without also being able to select a reply based on gold greater than. Negating it would be gold less than. I don't think gold equal to is necessary.
The interpreter would not have to be called for every line of dialogue, but it would be necessary to check every line to see if it needed to be called. That aside, I agree it's not worth the work to implement it. Too many other things to do that are way more important.
