Looking at the code, it already handles different cases for positive and negative values. It gave me an idea. While each prof level gives a 30% boost to positive values, how about giving a 15% decrease to negative values (getting these closer to 0).

I believe training and learning can help you best in leveraging the strengths of an item, while being of moderate use in overcoming the inherent shortcomings of such an item.
There may be a better way to express my idea, but I'm really tired now. The kids took the best of me. They deserve it, but I'm exhausted.

That sounds reasonable to me, although the skill descriptions might become a little wordy.

Just add "Equivalent penalties are reduced by 15% for each skill level".

It's not quite that easy, because the current text also needs to be modified. This would work though:

For each skill level increases any attack chance or block chance bonus of _____________ by 30% of the items base attack chance or block chance, and increases the items critical skill by 10% of the items base critical skill. Attack chance or block chance penalties are reduced by 15% for each skill level.
