Item values need to be seriously evaluated in this game.
At level 17 you're grinding in the wrong spot. I started the Shadow Gargoyle Trainer's / Master's cave at 15 and grinded there until I got a Ring of Lesser Shadow (it finally dropped today, at level 26). Each SGT / SGM drops around $20 gold per kill. By the time I walked out I had over 34K in gold. But that's not all. They also drop rubies (I had over 700), Polished Gems (I had over 500), Small Rocks (I had over 600) and regular health potions WHICH SELL FOR MORE THAN MEAT! (I had 650+ when I walked out of the cave.)

All told my grinding there gave me 11 levels of experience, 45K in gold, 650+ health potions (they sell for 34 gold each, so another 20K in gold if I sell them) and one Ring of Lesser Shadow (PRICELESS!!!). All that... while grinding.

Trust me.... you're grinding in the wrong area.
I must be doing something seriously wrong then because I get my ass kicked every other monster.
I have to be near a place to rest because potions cost so much and it's so hard to hit anything. My attack chance is 140 and I'm missing 3-4 times per battle, combine that with a creature that does like 4 attacks per round and I'm getting my ass kicked constantly.
Totally Agree with Firefly --- what's your equiptment? And how are you spending your Levelling points?

I've been playing for 6 years now. Because I never learned to save / back up my game saves, I have restarted characters 8 times. In all that time I have learned and gotten better each opportunity.

This time --- my first 12 levelling points went right into damage. ONE went into hit points in order to grab Increased Fortitude. EVERY SINGLE POINT AFTER.... save another into hit points for the same reason.... has gone directly into blocking.

Now --- that said --- My equipment at level 15 when I started was:

Heavy Steel Skullcap = + 8 to block
Lightweight Chainmail = +13 to block / +1 to dam. (To get this, I had to kill the Troll on the bridge and the theives right after. Those were tough fights and required a lot of regeneration of hit points even in the middle of battles.)
Shield = the one from Stoutford which gives +1-3 damage
Rings = TWO Polished rings of Backstabbing. meaning my damage is +8
Heavy Plated Gloves = Dam +2-4 / Block +9
(BACKUP GLOVES) = Troublemaker's gloves. I like the + to critical on them, as well as the boost to attack.
Vacor's Boots of Attak = Block +2

My whole focus going in there was to increase my block and damage, to make for slow, steady kills.

My weapons were the stilleto (nice 2.5x critical) and Flagstone's Pride (nice 1-6 dam and 2x critical).

All of this I had already obtained (and aimed towards all along) before I reached 15th level. My necklace is the only one that makes sense: Jewel of Fallhaven.

So.... my block was 32 going in and my damage was a decent 22-34, with criticals boosted upwards of 70.

And I brought a lot of bread to keep me going. Cheap and decent for healing back up. I spent the last of my gold buying 70 pieces of bread. I went into the cave with only 1 gold piece. Seriously. I walked out with 34,000+.

I once wrote a beginner's tutorial thread... tried to get the old-timers to give up some of their secrets. I'll dig around and rez it for you. It had a few good tips.... but not mine. I changed my direction after reading a few other threads here. My tips were only OK... as at the time I was aiming towards a Two-handed Sword build, and didn't understand the value of daggers.

I'll see if I can find it for you... and rez it.

Let's break it down. I don't know what else you have (one thing in particular), so I'll go through the options.

At level 17 you have either 10 or 11 AP to spend, depending on what skills you took (take that as a hint).

So with the FSB you get one hit, and then you are done. It is possible to reduce the attack cost of the weapon by one point, but at level 17 I doubt you have that (the "one thing in particular"). You have used 6AP, and either another attack or a move (needed to flee) costs 6AP, which you do not have. Your only option is to allow the monster to bash your brains in.

With the VD, on the other hand, you get the chance of two hits per round. The chance to hit is lower, and the damage is lower per hit, but not in total, because you get two chances to hit! Either that, or you can hit, and then flee. Fleeing will work 80% of the time. Then you can lick your wounds, and heal, but as just pointed out in another thread, the monster will not heal (incidentally, each point in the evasion skill increases your chance of fleeing by 5%, so with four points you will always flee successfully). The VD also has a chance of a critical hit, which works on most, although not all, monsters, with a multitplier of 2. That means that if you land a critical hit your total damage (not just the damage from the dagger) is doubled.

With that information you can decide which weapon to use ;)

Great info, thank you. I kinda had the feeling that the dagger was better than it's stats initially let on.

So I have the Strong Wooden Tower Sheild
Vacor's boots
Gloves of BG
Irogotu's necklace
Firm LA
Fine GH
Ring of SHit
and Troublemakers Ring

Seems like reasonable gear at level 17. There's better gear, but you need a lot of cash to buy it.
