I'm using YouWave (www.youwave.com) to emulate it on my PC, but mostly just to test things and/or try out new code that others have been testing with. It's slower, but works well-enough.

I have tested it with Android SDK but it's very unresponsive. Have noticed that many other games are slow too in the emulator.

I know it's 7 years later, but I thought I'd mention that I'm running it smoothly in Nox 6 without any problems at all. Plus, doing so makes it easier for me to see on my big (rotated) monitor.

P. S. How do you folks put in you sig line with your character stats? By hand? Or with something else?

By hand. I don't know of another way to do it.

Any recommendations on emulators for desktop/laptop nowadays? And among the available emulators, which of them are closed-source proprietary, and which ones are open-source?

Despite my technological ineptitude, I somehow managed to get Andor's Trail working on Waydroid on the Linux Desktop. However, I still need to learn more about Waydroid and figure out how to run it in QEMU/KVM virt-manager. I am not skilled enough to figure out how to do that yet. If I ever have time and acquire the tech skills, I might also look to see if waydroid can be run in windows subsystem for linux, as a way for windows users to play andor's trail on desktop. But I assume that windows users are happy with running something closed-source like Bluestacks or nox or something.
