game fault
The guard outside the tavern dropped a ring, but when I went to my inventory it wasn't there. Now he's gone so I can't fight him again so have no way of getting the ring.

What tavern are you talking about?
The only guard I can think of standing outside a tavern stays there even after you complete the quest he is involved in (not a fighting quest).

sorry, i couldn't remember the name of it at the time. The foaming Tavern. part of the quest to help the folk from Vileguard - Jolner from the chapel asks you to get rid of the guard outside the tavern.
