Game drops to title screen, loses progress since last save

Howdy!

I've been having an issue where the game suddenly stops and drops to the title screen. Selecting "Continue current game" takes me to my most recent save.

This has occurred while fighting an Azthiel in waterway7, an Azthiel Guardian in waterway5, and a Hardened Erumen lizard in waterway9.

It's occurred a few other times as well, where I wasn't paying enough attention to remember for sure what map I was on. However, I'm certain all were in waterway maps. I *think* one occurred outside of combat, but it's possible something respawned in my path and I entered combat without noticing before it dropped to the title screen.

I only started grinding for a Shadowfang a few days ago and didn't encounter this issue anywhere else, despite having played a pretty decent number of hours elsewhere since 0.7.3's release. So I suspect the issue is limited to the waterway area. But maybe that's just optimistic speculation on my part.

Do you recall if it happens at any point in a fight, or when you initially attack?

I found crash reports on Google play that could fit your description. It seems to be triggered by the loot's short notification (a toast in android parlance).
There are very few occurrence, all on Android 8+, and the crash is happening in android code only, no trace of our own. There's very little we can do about it.

Try changing your setting for "Display monster loot" to something that doesn't use short notifications. I'll try to gather some more information on this and see if I can do something.

@rijackson741 I've been grinding for a Shadowfang, so most of the occurrences have occurred while I'm only half paying attention. But for the three occurrences I mentioned in my first post, where I was paying close enough attention to remember the details, the error occurred during the combat phase, not immediately upon initiation of combat. If it occurs again after I make the changes Zukero recommended I'll try to see if there are any other details I call recall. Problem is, it occurs very intermittently, so it's tough to know when to be paying really close attention. If there are specific details you'd like me to watching for though, let me know and I'll do my best!

@Zukero I'll make the recommended changes. If it happens again after that I'll let you know. And if I'm able to grind long enough to snag a Shadowfang without it happening again, I'll be sure to check in to confirm to you that it worked. Thanks!

Changing my "Display monster loot" setting from "Show short notification" to "Do not display" seems to have done the trick. About 200 Azthiel Guardians (plus misc. monsters between them) later, I have my Shadowfang and haven't encountered the bug again.

It sounds like you know more-or-less what's causing it, so I'm going to leave the notifications off. But if you think there's anything to be gained from trying to get a more detailed description of when it occurs, let me know and I'd be happy to turn them back on so I can report more.

No problem.

From what I gathered, the android dev team changed some of the code behind toasts for Android 9 (Pie), and this causes crashes when a toast is fired while the previous one is still active, which can happen when you kill mobs like grass with a lawnmower.

The fix I'm currently considering involves using a custom drop-in replacements for toasts. I found one on github that seems perfect, but I have doubts about the license. I asked the author and wait for the answer.

The fix will certainly not be in the next version(v0.7.4) , but probably in the one after (v0.7.5 normally).

Hi

to add some peace of information: if andors trail CTD, the setpoint of current game is either the last savepoint or the last dialog.
This is bad if either of those events happens a long time in the past, but on the other hand if the player was in a chanceless position and the last dialog was way more actual than the the last save it has a benefit ;)
