This would add to the game and the player's motivation. Right now leveling up, solving quests and collecting items are the main tasks. Achievements would provide a different set of goals for the player. They could fill a gap if a player needs to grind in order to become powerful enough to tackle the next quest. You need two more levels? Why not get another level of the snake achievement? It is always a good idea to offer parallel tasks that keep a player entertained when he gets stuck on one path.

I think one great source of inspiration for this could be Red Dead Redemption. The achievements of that game are designed in way that you can master them in parallel to the main story. When the game takes you to Mexico, you have to collect Mexican herbs, hunting achievements require you to keep your eyes open while traveling the world etc. In order to get the achievements players should complete 100% of a certain game dimension: kill at least one monster of each kind, visit each map of the game at least once, trade with every merchant there is, talk to all possible people, sell every kind of loot...

My suggestions: achievements require the player to go the extra mile, to kill some monsters that are usually left alive because they positioned off the beaten track. The Oegyth Crystals are a great idea also. Items like that could be a monitor to show people how far they have come until now.
+1 I like this idea a lot.

+1 nice one and the bored one is propably Me

Some more:

Character titles, achievement system

Post by Fel »

Character titles:
The character gains a title as he reach specific lvls, i.e. Lvl 10 - Adventurer, Lvl 20 - Experienced Adventurer.
A lvl 20 character name, for example, can be like this:
Jaja, Experienced Adventurer

Gaining these also gives rewards; exp, gold or items, perhaps. At high lvl titles, the rewards are "special abilities" like Axor's suggestion.

Achievement system:
Character titles fall under Achievement System. Along w/ titles are other achievements like number of monster killed, exp acquired in a single battle, etc...
Same w/ rewards; exp, gold or items. Difficult achievements gives "special abilities" or, perhaps, upgrades those gained abilities.
Completing some quests can also give achievements.
An achievement cannot be gained if the character has not reached a specific title.

Achievements require to enter some areas?
i.e. Completing Cheap Cuts achieves "Sheep Shredder". W/ that in your name you will be able to enter, say, the "House of Murderers" in a very secluded part of Nor City.

I do not approve on the titles. You barely never check your name, so why put a title to it?

The achievement system tough, I approve!
Always fun with hard/hidden achievements that you can unlock.

"Rat Lover"
Reach level 10 without killing any rats"

"It's just a tail
Kill 10000 snakes"

this is great - we have been talking about adding achievements

maybe something like...

- you gain a new title with every five achievements
- with the new title you gain certain bonuses based on your actions

this could give a sense of accomplishment & also grow your character with less grinding.
[but not reducing the total grind so much that it changes the "feel" of the game]
"Embrace the Shadow"

Heh, Rat Lover is awesome. I definitely like achievements of that nature - ones that you wouldn't normally get just by playing the usual way or even by grinding. Achievements should be special, not the norm. I do not like the "It's just a tail" achievement for that same reason. Who wants to sit there and grind out 10,000 snakes?

Other possible achievements:
Got Lost
Reach Remgard before level 20

Undecided
Don't help Prim or Blackwater until level 50

Window Shopper
Purchase at least 1 of every vendor sold piece of equipment

Tactical Retreat
Flee from a combat when you have only 1 HP remaining

That Tickles
Survive 25 rounds of combat with the same monster

Condition This!
Apply 10 positive or negative conditions to either yourself or an enemy during a single combat (Passive conditions such as Shadow Regeneration do not count)

Why not use the titles to also get cheaper prices or more gold for quests or achievements that tie together for combo effect either in shops or quests or just running around killing lol

Hmm, we may have to raise the requirements then

I just chose a number off the top of my head that sounded difficult to accomplish but perhaps level 10 or 15 would be better. I thought most people didn't try to get there till level 30.

Well that explains my struggling back then

Anyway, back to topic, the idea of combining achievements to shop prices etc. etc. would be cool. But to ask the question everybody thinks of: who will do it? I'm definitely not capable.

I can't wait to have coded enough of my scripting engine to show off how far we could go with it !
In theory, it should be able to combine the type of effects of skills, actor conditions, and items, improved with logic (if-else branching, calculus...), and plug these scripts to any game object : item, map, dialogue, actor conditions, NPC...
If I code it fast enough (that is, before someone else codes an achievement system differently), it will be very easy to develop an achievement system based on it, with weird/complex/awesome rewards based on it too !
