I've personally disabled that dialogue as I found it annoying. We should make sure changes still work without it.

Also, I'm no sure about the no cancel all the time. What about the evasion skill?

I would just change "Cancel" to "Flee", and make it work like fleeing in combat. So with no levels of Evasion you would have an 80% chance of fleeing (i.e. of getting the same effect as "Cancel" would give now). Each level of Evasion would raise that chance by 5%, so with 4 levels of Evasion "Flee" would become equivalent to the current "Cancel".

Me too. Always have since Jax brought it up. I just think there should be a higher or lower escape chance in the event you may startle the monster. Whether its higher or lower depends on the specific type of beastie. As Jax pointed out if you startle a bear, you're more likely to get killed, so that will lower your escape chance. But if you startle a humanoid creature, that may increase your chances of getting away. So it should go up or down by 0% - 5% with a 20% chance of surprise.

I don't disagree with that variation, except to the extent that it would be a lot more work to implement. We would have to introduce a new property to monsters: intelligence. At a minimum we would then have to retroactively assign intelligence to groups of monsters. More realistically, we would have to retroactively assign intelligence to every monster; are humanoid looking giants (e.g. Zortaks) intelligent, but bear like giants (e.g. a Mountain brute) not?

Ok... so forget the intellect factor and just add a 10 - 20% chance that you may get anywhere from -5% to 5% additional chance to escape. Because we humans are not the only species capable of mistakes.

But, isn't the additional chance to escape what the evasion skill is for?

That just complicates the probability calculation, but doesn't change that there is a fixed probability of fleeing. In fact, as long as the additional chance of fleeing ranges from -x% to +x%, regardless of what x is (in your example, 5), the actual chance of fleeing remains at 80% (the -x% deficit exactly cancels the +x% bonus).
