I assume that the "Cancel" button is there because there is no way to get information about a monster except by bumping into it. So if the cancel button goes away, how to get info about a monster before you commit to a fight? Short or long pressing on the monster is not available, because that will make you move. A button that looks like an eye perhaps? You press it, followed by the object you are interested in (in this csae, a monster), and it shows you the information?

You mean changing the label or make it a full-fledged attempt to flee ?

That cancel button is helpful for fat-fingered people (like me) who can't walk straight using a touchscreen. It kind of levels the field with those using a keyboard or even those talented with the d-pad.

this is starting to make me think about movement...
(the avoiding obstacles option)

i have always "felt" that it helps avoiding mobs as well...
they don't seem to "catch" you as much when skirting around them.

I've gotten past many mobs by running into an object beside them so the 'avoid obstacles' option would move me diagonally behind the mob, then just keep going. I usually only did that in areas where I had to do a lot of back & forth. I like to kill everything in sight my first time through an area. After that its just kill whatever gets in the way and ignore what doesn't. Also, it should be impossible to flee if the monsters have you surrounded too.

I meant a full fledged attempt to flee. So when you bump into a monster, you are in combat mode, with no option of "apologizing and running away".

Yes. I mostly play AT on an 8" tablet, but when I do play it on my phone I agree that fat fingers can be a problem.

Well if you really think about it, at the onset you bumped into the beastie. So there should be a slightly higher chance of successful flee attempt because you may have startled the monster. Flee would then just leave the baddie confused as to what just happened. "Hey, some kid just bumped into me this morning and before I could ask him if he was ok, he ran away! It was the darndest thing!"

So if you are out walking in the woods, and you bump into a grizzly bear, you have a higher chance to run away, because it's confused? Maybe. You can try it, and let me know

I said with some mobs. Like the more intelligent ones. As in you get a random chance of getting an extra 5% for a successful flee attempt. So if you're walking along and bump into a being of the same type as, say, Tiqui, that doesn't offer dialogue before the fight, you have a chance of having startled the creature. Which would help towards a flee attempt.

You have a point, but if you are in combat then your chance to flee (with no levels of Evasion) is 80%. I could argue that if, in the real world, you are in hand-to-hand combat (or hand-to-paw combat?) with a grizzly bear your chances of successfully running away are quite a bit lower than that . Maybe a compromise then. If you bump into a monster you have the options of attack or flee. If you choose to flee you have a 90% chance of success (or 100% with two levels of Evasion), but only for that one attempt. If you fail you are then in combat, and the normal rules apply.

Or keep it at 80% but if the creature is intelligent you get a 20% chance of gaining and additional 5% to a flee attempt upon bumping into the monster.

Thus, 20% of the time an intelligent mob offers you an 85% chance of successfully fleeing, all others only net you an 80% chance.
