Perhaps the rift leads to a shadow realm where Vacor intends to steal an artifact (the "heart of shadow" -type thing?) If the artifact is ever removed from its current location, the Shadow will lose all power. This will allow for more quests and maps in the future. Killing Vacor only prolongs the opening of the rift, but some other agent of the light may attempt it later. Thus, if you did not kill Vacor, he gets the spell wrong here and there and needs to work on it, but eventually gets it right and the Light Lubbers send you on the quest to obtain the artifact. If you did kill Vacor, someone else eventually opens the rift and Nor City sends you in to defend the artifact.

What if you came at this from the OTHER direction? We assume portals to be two way.... But what if what Vacor does accidentally opens a portal that allows more serious monsters to come from the shadow realm into ours?

What if it gave you the chance to REPEATEDLY fight a random high level boss type monster.... In order to keep our realm safe?

So you wanna stand still and just kill monsters all day?

Edit: No offense intended. Sometimes my New York self comes out.

Isn't that what we do in game anyway?

Let's put a timer on it... If you stand around Vacor's rift for X seconds, 1 or 2 monsters show up for you to fight. Pacific Rim, Avengers... Similar...

In this case you would have a vast pool of mobs (sorry, Minecraft player) that potentially could show up, each with their own drops, and all high level and all dangerous if left around. I like the idea of Vacors attempted rift backfiring... And having something deadly to fight.

That's not what we're doing. The hero is traveling, searching for his brother. He can't very well do that if he's standing there waiting for monsters to show up. Besides, if that's all you're doing it WILL get boring after a while. Games are supposed to be fun. Just fighting a gauntlet of beasties is boring. The quest is what makes it interesting. Not the combat.

I would TEND to agree with you... but.... combat is the system here.

If you look to last year in this forum you'll find "The Gandhi Challenge" where I proposed a NON-combative manner of gameplay. Sad fact was... you can only go so far that way.

Questing is fun.... but to get there you need levels and to level you need combat and.... we're back to a proposed use for Vacor's Rift.

That said, it could be timed so that it only drops in one Boss Level Mob once or twice a day... so that we're not waiting around, we're simply dropping by ----- for the protection of the people of Fallhaven.

Lord knows those people need it.....

What if portal leads you to a random map and you find nothing and you come back to vacor and portal leads you to yet another random map ... And this happens every time. It might be useful as a way to travel instantly to a location... But only if you are lucky

Interesting idea, but it is not possible to make something random in AT. It is possible to make some things appear random, but even that is not easy.

That's just it though, you need a balance of questing and combat. I have never had a problem gaining levels in AT. There are plenty of beasties to fight on the way, we don't need more.

Vacor sometimes appears to be a bit confused - so there is no wonder that he need some time to get the rift spell correctly. So you firstly try to discover new things and help other people. After youve done that (after you solved the BWM-task?) you return to Fallhaven, a well known and secure place to rest, but somehow people a frightened now and you hear of demonic monster suddently appearing in the south. Investigating it, you find Vacor next to his finally completed rift but somehow something went wrong while he summoned it (he made it too rushed) and he opened this one-way-rift and now these monsters are pooping out of it and you will have to find to close the thing again (how ever...)

But what would happen if you had killed Vacor?! Maybe Unzel tried to do something good with the knowledge of his old master. But because he left Vacor before his studies were finally finished he accidently made the same "mistake".
