Graphical Assets, source and license?

Post by anakanemison »

Hi Andor's Trail devs,

First I want to say how impressed I am with the game and its source code; really clean and nice technologies used here.

It got me wondering about the graphics you guys are using; do they have as liberal a license as the code you're working on? Can we modify, redistribute them too?

Thanks for your consideration!

Thank you for the comments.

There are several tilesets used. They are listed in the About/Help section under Authors.

As far as the licensing of each tileset you would have to check their respective links to see if their licensing is compatible with whatever license you choose. They should work will most open source licenses, GNU, GPL, BSD, MIT, etc.

Hi anakanemison,

Most of the graphical resources are licensed under a CC sharealike license, as stated on their corresponding pages on devart that we link to. Some are not CC or GPL in their original form, but some are not, and I have gotten explicit written approval from the author(s) to use them to this project.

I guess that makes all of them GPLv2 now that we are releasing Andor's Trail as GPLv2. Otherwise we will have to update the license text to state that. In my view, you are welcome to redistribute and modify the graphics in any way you see fit if you make sure the derivative still follows the GPLv2.

Good point, and thank you for bringing it up anakanemison!

um, I am hesitant to say this, but I looked over the tileset sources. Much of those are from RPGmaker, in particular an RTP pack. No one can release those under a license except enterbrain of japan. There are hundreds of copies out there, and people say they are releasing them under license, but the RTP tiles dont belong to those people, legally, you cant release something to public domain or under a gpl or similar unless you own it. Only the company enterbnrain could release those tiles.

I know there are tons of copies out there, but you cant release 'megaman' to thje public domain any easier. You could draw a pixel art spritesheet of megaman, and that picture could be released. You cant screen grab megaman, cut him out and release that. This is exactly how the RTP was released. I dont want to naysay, but oscar seems to want to stay very legitimate. The tiles you are using are technically in copyright infringement. I highly doubt enterbrain will take action, hundreds of rpgmaer sites abound and they haven't yet. For the record though, I though t I recognized the tiles, they belong to enterbrain, not the artist on deviant art posting them.

Scary right. Anyway, I hate to mention it, but oscar seems so deadset on staying legal.
Discuss? does anyone care?

ok, check this out, I just went looking for the original source of the tileset. It is located here:

http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/modules/refm ... ode=vx-map

These are all free to use, made by the original artists there, it seems that enterbrain got them from that site. Near as I can tell.

Weird huh. You should credit FSM/tekepon. They also have a very nice expanded version of the tileset, looks like it can do some amazing things. Tons of great resources there.
