I agree with your idea of which meaning for "trail" is most appropriate - where has he gone, not a physical road or path. In English the second meaning is sometimes used as a metaphor for the first, but that might be confusing in another language.

Just a quick note about keeping english proper names. There's pros and cons to this, and I think it is best to let each translator decide. The important factor is whether the target audience can decipher the occidental alphabet easily. For Chinese translation, where the a-z letters aren't used in everyday life, it may be best to change the names, based on phonetics or original meaning.
In Andor's Trail, people names generally have no meaning, but town names do.
That's where translation becomes an art rather than a peon's task (or an AI's).
