Still leave it as a quest (way of the Monk) to start in multi areas. Crossglen and then get the second skill point at Charwood. Why use weapons until then? The priest in Crossglen and the guy in Fallhaven that helps you get into the tombs should be good starter.

Why is it too restrictive?

1) you can start over at any time and dake a different one.
2) many games do it. With way more restrictions and no chance to change class. I did not say remove it from the skill tree. Therefore you can always get the others by investing the skillpoints
3) if you leave it as is, and just put the first skill point in at game start, you effectively have 1 skill point more than before, therefor 1 more option in total, not less.

I cannot see any drawback, only a gain

For many players, "starting over" would mean giving up and dropping the game.

If it were an immediate skill point at the start, then we would just be moving skill points forward in the game. We do not want to do this. Skills are something you have to work for.
