on my first build i had a "I do what i want" additude. On the ones after that i definitly feel like i thought about it a little longer, but i am still not %100 sure that all my choices are the "right one" also.
Yes, I truly agree that it is difficult knowing what is best in the beginning, but hopefully we all learn, and do better when presented with the next opportunity.

Both give you boots...
Unzel has defensive boots [if you side with Valcor]
And Valcor has boots of attack [should you side with Unzel]
I suppose the N is neither? I had heard it was possible to kill both, but I haven't accomplished that feat.. of three tries, I've killed Valcor twice; so I'd say the assumption in OP is correct.
Being able to kill both, and Vacor numerous times, was once possible. This was a bug, and it was fixed. You could install an older release if you want to experiment with this, but I don't recommend it. Carrying around multiples of one of the quest items you get in the process, that you can't lose from your inventory, is not a desirable result.

Killing both shouldn't be possible unless there is a bug (like the reloading maps bug, which should also be fixed now.)
I've killed Valcor
I made him mad trying to get more of the story
Didn't really know what the shadow was ( I think I stilll not really sure)
After collecting the pieces from the bandits then deciding to kill valcor I wish you could alter and use the spell to twist the shadow to your favor
