I probably risk sounding like a broken record here buuuut, i'm not a fan of crafting in games. It is boring, tedious, and mostly pointless.

Crafting is great for games that allows trading between players, because players can trade crafted items or items for crafts they dont want to learn for items they would want to use. Crafting is useful in mmorpgs but not in old school rogue rpgs (A.T. feels/plays like one)

Right you are Pyrizzle, an MMO is more beneficial for crafting but from what I have read so far is there is a lot that is lacking in the game for more advanced players. Complicated as the original idea sounds, it could be much elaborate and complex for an MMO...but the original idea stems from a very small 2D morpg that I wrote for vb.net with a system that could work for a game such as this one. It's done in such a way to allow for a very free form of crafting which can add to keeping players busy, yet being easy to implement and make any changes from a developmental standoint while defining the outcome with a strict standard of guidelines.

It's free form in the sense that they player essentially has a lot to do as far as achieving the raw materials, finding the crafting specialist, combining any number of ingredients with an additional fee, and getting a pretty limitless number of items...yet it's set by the standards of the dev's when it comes to the base items (weapons/armor), the raw materials (ice shards/lava shards), the skills they add during combat (freeze/burn) and the percentage strength depending on the quality of the materials for the base items.

Essentially the player has the ability to create truly epic items, it just takes a lot of time in gathering the raw ingredients, locating a very high level crafting specialist, and hoping what is paid to them along with the players selected base materials and raw ingredients will result in a great item.

And while the idea alone of this method of crafting sounds pointless, tying it in with quests, makig certain crafting specialists only available to a certain side chosen by the player, maybe a few other ideas could add a lot of depth, fun, and interest in something like this for old and new players :)

Very good point by piggy.

My feeling is I don't think I will like HEARTSTEEL because it will be grey...I don't like grey...

Really? What is the point in having a forum to offer up ideas if they are just senslessly going to be shot down and not discus the pros and cons instead? I think I have elaborately explained my idea...not to say that it has to be exactly like I have pointed out in the examples, but it is a start to add something a bit unique to the game.

Is there any way someone can point me in the right direction of the thread that discusses the EXACT direction of this game, and/or what pre-fabbed ideas that are not going to be shot down? Thanks...

actually, this is the perfect spot...

you can go [ here ] to give your idea a little bit of a push before the next meeting.

but, this thread is great!

it's not even a day old yet & already on its second page.
it's spawned some great brainstorming & discussion.

i wouldn't consider an idea "shot down" until you see oskar's red name on here saying "no"

if he does deny the idea, he usually explains why & leads the person with the idea in another (possibly similar) direction.

on a similar note, some things that may be used commonly in the future take some time to implement deeply early in development. something like the empty bottles, when i saw them over a year ago - i knew i would be using them... and only recently did i actually need one for a quest. and only once has Oskar used the ability of the shopkeeper to take our gear & improve it. who knows what's coming?

whether this idea is great or not, the focus in relation to weapons (at the moment) is categorizing them & generating new standard weapons. when that subject is concluded, other ideas related to gear & items will get more attention. so, just keep talking about your favorite ideas, even if they get a bad reaction... im sure someone out there agrees - and maybe they can grow into an idea that does end up in the game? Becuase really, stuff like making potions on your own & customizing your weapons / character seem to be what this game is all about.

it just takes some time to finalize older ideas into new machanics and then fully utilize existing mechanics.
so, keep it up guys!

With all the updates to combat comming up (duel weilding, weapon specialization, etc) i feel like this idea could overpower the players waaaaaaay to fast. There really isnt too much to do in the game after you hit lvl 30 besides wonder around and level up more (all content in game can be beaten by lvl 30 easily). After that the game gets slow, which is why i have started over so many times.

Even if every detail could be worked out for implementing this type of crafting there is nothing to say it has to be put in the game right away. It could be saved for a rainy day or an additional upgrade period when there is not enough other completed ideas worked in. Also, it could be worked out so that instead of basic items being upgraded, more advanced items could be done for later in the game, like past lvl 30 since that seems to be a stalling point.

Could be, could be, could be...at any rate the idea is out there for discussion whether or not it is used or just built upon for a more solid method that works better for this game. However, I don't think I will be trying to offer up some advanced questing methods anytime soon that would essentially work 2 fold like this crafting idea: expansive for the players yet easily controlled by the dev's with very little effort.

One of the main reasons I even posted about this is even though there is a lot of work being done for the game a lot of the suggestions just seem to be thrown in and nothing seems structured. This would provide for that as far as items go, and a bit more of structure to how everything flowed together. Some ideas haven't even taken a lot of critical aspects into consideration, which seems to just slop the game up even more...I did try to hit a lot of the details that would be changed or affected by something like this ;)

The combat updates sound really great though. Since I am a low level I might even just start over in order to try everything from scratch and to provide input.

P.S. Any way you could add this thread to your list of already suggested ideas so that it might be seen by others with ideas for crafting?

I think I like the idea, especially the part about searching for rare components to make your equipment better and also very special.
I don't really agree with the comment of it being boring/pointless - I think it's not more boring or pointless than grinding for legendary items (especially the ones you would never use anyway, just to "complete the set". Now THAT is boredom!)

In the beginning the legendary item (only the RoLS at that time) has been created to give advanced players something to do in the long wait between updates.
Nowadays all advanced players seem to have multiples of each item, so this proposed searching for rare components to beef up and specialize your equipments sounds like a perfect addition!

If there was but the slightest chance to get a more than cool ice-sword by finding some rare crystals that would require me to search the whole gameworld over sixhundredthirtythree times I think I would go for it...and I guess I would not be the only one!
The crafting part itself is more a detail, how the crystals end up in my sword I don't really care. It's the search thast holds the thrill.

So, instead of being boring and pointless, this would add something extra to the game to keep us busy, give more amusement and will require you to keep searching - and that's more than what most of the ideas currently being discussed do.
(I mean, weapon categorization and specialization is nice, but after 1 hour of gameplay you would have seen already what is has to offer. It provides only a small lasting amusement-value and for such a big chance that's a pity...)
Still playing this game at level 5, collected all extraordinaries, now some precious ring would be useful...
