Crits vs. DR

Post by Nyk »

When calculating Crits damage does it multiply then subtract DR or is it the other way around?

I don't have the code, but I have always assumed (because it makes more sense) that the game engine determines the attacker's damage for this round and then subtracts from that the defender's DR. Assuming that it was determined that the hit was a success.

(Base Damage x Crit multiplier) - Damage Resistance.

Easy way to test: Get 1 point of DR and go to the cave west of Fallhaven. Let a Tooth Critter crit you. It will do (1 x 3) - 1 = 2 damage. If DR were applied first, it would deal (1 - 1) x 3 = 0 damage.

You're totally right, Necrite!
Imagine, 10 DR would be enough to deflect almost any crit damage if it worked the other way round :!:

Necrite is right. It's something I figured out when I was training in the Gargoyle Trainers/Masters area. I had 4 or 5 DR then... only way they could hurt me is if the critical kicked in after. The negation is an after effect.
