Underwater exploration

Post by AdLeto »

What about items that makes the player travel underwater, a snorkel that gives you drowning imunnity (like the poison ring), of course there would be limits, not every piece of water being able to enter.

The snorkel would be a end game item, likely selled by a merchant, (a diver in a possibly future costal area?) or recieved as reward from a quest (given by the possibly diver).

Just making the character able to swim would break the progression, low leveled characters being able to enter areas they aren't supposed to enter.

It is necessary to create something that enables the swimming, i talked about a snorkel because it would be simpler, there is an actor condition called drowning, you can get it by staying in the dam after breaking it with a hatchet, the snorkel would grant immunity to it like the ring in brimhaven that you can buy, except that is for poison instead.

Underwater exploration don't seemt to attract players attention. Gta 5 is a case in point. Many players still wanted to spend their time on ground than underwater. It takes a lot of attention to details in order to make underwater exploration interesting. And, developers would not want to spend that much time. When they can make the game outside the underwater exploration much better.

Swimming is a good feature worth introducing to cut player's time and offer an alternative mode of travel. Even some sort of transportation like boats or rafts (already seen in a quest) would be cool.

Have you ever tried swimming in armor whilst carrying weapons and other equipment? I assume not, because if you tried that you would no longer be posting here ;)

What? U mean, possible to swim?
I have tried swimming. But the game doesn't even allow to step into the water.

Or, its a reason to not allow swimming? Like, seriously? Loll. Suspension of disbelief to some extent doesn't hurt. Why should the equipment or clothing matter to allow swimming? Like I said, a boat or a raft solves this issue easily.

Game is not real, although some realisms are expected. Sometimes games disallow something for the sake of game play. Some restriction is ridiculous, others make sense. It's part of game and we just accept it because it is game. Like a little log blocking the road. In real life we can simply pick it up and move it, or jump over it. But it is useful for the game to prevent the player to go that way.

Here's a video for fun:

Then make the waters dangerous to avoid players seeking a shortcut to specific areas that developers want to block till the right time to remove the blockade, or make the waters safer?
I don't see any strong reason to restruct the player from either swimming or travelling through waters. Why forcefully restrict the player to ony have one access to any area? What harm will it do to the game if I can swim across than take a long road to the destination?

No, there can never be a general swimming ability. Water like mountain walls or dense wood are natural borders. If you were able to cross these borders, there would be many inconsistencies. Imagine you could swim through the great river, then the bridge blockers (troll and bridge guard to Guynnart) would be meaningless.
Or then you could swim to Remgard without starting the quest at the gate.
Or many other situations.

Although I understand your wish, it won't be possible.
Such an ability must be kept in mind at the beginning of development, or it will never work.

I won't say the hero will never be able to swim or dive or even fly. But only in special places - never generally in this game.

Btw. there is already a place where you can swim - in Arulir mountains, but unfortunately unconscious and only once

If not swimming then a mode of transport as an alternative would be great, similar to the raft seen in a quest. It can be introduced on specific points (particularly, the northern strip) on the map. There's already a bridge at some points, and having a transportation on the other areas not covered by the bridge to connect the distances would be a good feature to have. Remgard can be excluded.
