I consume a couple of potion types that makes this quest very easy to complete

Memorize? I drop small rocks, which are otherwise worthless, and I have a lot of them, to mark the path.

That's an excellent idea!
I did that initially. But I've been there so many times, that they were no longer relevant. So I picked them up again!

If you have played several times with different heroes (thus, different dark map), it'll get easier to guess the pathway through the dark mine. There are certain part of the patterns that seems to be used quite often.
