Legendary and Extraordinary items (That you have to grind for) will NEVER be required to finish content in the game.

To ask a player to grind that much for something to beat the game would be cruel.

If you don't want to grind, don't. I'm not sure why we're grinding at this level, but I hope it is worth it in release 0.8 or maybe even 1.0.

I feel like i am talking to myself. well at least the conversation will be good.

I hope that GoW (the new gem anyways, I'm bad with names ) is for something awesome like socketing weapons (extraordinary and/or legendary ones) or giving them an extra attribute by chance. It might also be comverted into a rare or extraordinary equipable item (with or without the socketing option). And well, since not even Oegith crystals, which are quest items, are as of yet required to progress any quest I doubt that a gem will be required for advancing any quests at all.

They will not be required to complete any parts of the game. You can choose to hunt them down or to not bother, it is your choice and either way it will not effect your ability to continue on.
