just resurrected my interest in AT last week, after unexpectedly obtaining the GoLF while waiting for my movie to start so now i'm grinding for ElyR and thought of sharing with you guys my approach.
DISCLAIMER: the below points are solely my personal approach to the ElyR grind and may not necessarily represent views and opinions of other members of this hallowed forum so, follow at your own risk and indefinite time consumption
anyways, here are the steps:
1. finished the Blackwater-Prim conflict quest, i chose to side with Blackwater settlement.
2. helped Herec at Blackwater with his quest by getting those 5 white wyrm claws.
3. grind away in the nearby caves
simple, ain't it? the reason i chose to side with Blackwater is simply because their location is nearest to the caves where those wyrm trainers/apprentices are spawning. you get free bed nearby to help restore your health and remove fatigue. plus, helping Herec gives you access to the Restore Fatigue potions, which though rather expensive, proves useful when you wander a bit too far from Blackwater and hit by fatigue condition.
it's no guarantee that i'd get ElyR quickly this way, but personally i find that this method is helping a lot with the grind
will grind for RoL next after getting the ElyR as i'm not too comfortable probing in dark places

good luck, but especially the search for the Rol can be quite a pain, it took a long time before I finally got one.

Good advice! Getting the Rol and/or the Elyr can be quite the pain in the butt. Good luck on your hunt!
Sidenote: Still in the caves hunting a Rols for my Eager Cleaver build. Maybe i should try my luck with my lvl one for a bit, maybe my Hunter build will have a more profitable experience.
------------------------------------------------Update------------------------------------
Got a Rols and decided to grab the Gloves of Lifeforce while on my way onto Blackwater Mountain.
Here's a list of all the items I obtained: (magic finder level 0)
20 Polished Gem
29 Minor Vial of Health
21 Sharpened Gem
45 Bone
20 Potion of Health
01 Gloves of Lifeforce
Now to finish the mountain quests and then get a Rapier of Lifesteal... or two.

thanks for the encouragement, guys. as it happened i hit on ElyR a couple of days back.
couldn't believe my luck as i was playing while waiting to sleep. i usually play at max 2 hours per day and i spent roughly a week and a half since i started grinding.
not sure what was the benchmark item, but i had exactly 70 weak poison at the time i got the ElyR. quite happy with the loot, as i found GoLF pretty useless compared to my troublemaker's gloves.
am trying to attach the screenshot, hope it works

Draven,
Congratulation! Don't be surprised if you find yourself never using this weapon as there are better alternatives out there.

I think ima hunt for it. If you do the math you have about 11 opertuneitys in getting this item. So the odds do.get increased but not by much.

Yes, there are 11 NPCs in the area that will drop the Elyr... to kill 10,000 of them you would need to clear all the rooms 909.0 times...
Good luck!
---------------------Rol------------------------------------ (just for fun)
8 Npcs that drop it (5+3) so you'd have to clear the room of all the Imps that drop it 1,250.0 times... O.O
Youch!!
Well after i finish up Blackwater Mountain i am going into the caves to try for a pair of Rol... 2,500 times to clear if it took 10,000 kills for each... *gulp* where did i put those marbles???
