What is the chest used for? And how does it work?

They are called "quick slots". Click the chest, then long press the quick slot and a pop-up window appears. Click the "assign" button. Most people will add health portions or meat.

You can also assign items from the inventory display to a quick slot by long pressing the item then choosing assign to quick slot.

Of course, there has been a problem with a lag between tapping the screen and getting the response from the game on most phones in the 0.6.10 update, which is solved by emptying the quick-use slots. They were very useful in 6.9, (where they were added to the game) and we all hope that they will be again in 6.11 (without causing a lag problem.)
