Is Shadow of the Slayer worth it

So while I am grinding for my RoLS, I am using SotS because I can mow through the Shadow Trainers and Masters fairly easily. I like the +1 to hp on every kill, so I am not going through potions quite as quickly. But I was wondering, after I finally get my RoLS, should I even still be using the huge and cumbersome weapon? Sure it gives me +2 to AP and with my JoF, I can get 2 shots in a round. And if I max combat speed, that will give me 14 APs, but I will still only get 2 hits a round. If I drink a speed potion, my AP will go up to 16, but still, I will only get 2 hits a round. So is it even worth it later on in the game. I also have a balanced steel sword, and with my jewel, I get 3 hits a round, no bonus to AP, but with max combat speed, I will get 4 hits a round. The balanced steel sword does 2 less damage, but has a better AC. If I get corpse eater, I will get back that +1 hp on kill. Also, I get the crit chance and multiplier with the SoS, but with the new version, will it even be worth the space to carry it around?

You explained it well. I went through the same logic many many months ago and came to the conclusion that it's not worth it

I agree with tek that the SotS is not worth it, but I do not like the RoL nearly as much as he does. And this is even though I am using it in the Iqhan cave. I do not have as many HP as tek, and when I started using the RoL because of tek and others talking about being immortal, the first thing I did was die! The Dagger of the Shadow Priests had been giving me 4hits/turn and Cleave 1 gave me an extra hit after killing the first of two (or more) monsters in the same fight, and I was doing just fine in the Iqhan cave. The RoL, on the other hand, gives only 3hits/turn, and the bonus from Cleave was wasted because it was not enough for another hit. I could not reliably survive against multiple foes, even just two at once. I then got Cleave 2, which has improved the situation a lot, and I can now stay alive to appreciate the healing powers of the weapon, which are what make tek love it so much. I still try to avoid multi-foe combat when I can, however. I actually like the DotSP better, and it has critical hits, which are about to be downgraded.

So I went out and picked up the DotSP and I have to say that I like it a lot. Before, I was using healing potions to get past mobs, now, I am critting them like crazy and getting through them a lot easier now. I can see why you decided to use cleave, those caves are set up perfectly for that. Well, now that I got the DotSP, I can go back to grinding for my RoLS

this is a great post, especially now...

in the new version, criticals don't effect undead or devils & demons.
so I am brainstorming about a second set of gear to switch to...

[when my New Criticals build enters an area full of said enemies]

with most of my skills being tied up in Criticals now,
im going to be looking for a nice alternate set-up to help "speed up" battles.

this may just be a weapon swap...
or it may also include changing some other gear to maximize my effectiveness.
[since, suddenly, my crits are gone - NICE TOUCH OSKAR!!!]

my point is, weapon strategies will be shifting a bit...
especially if you are starting over (or under lvl 60)!
