Disabilities

I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy http://www.aboutrsd.com/. It is a disabling condition that keeps me in bed for weeks at a time from the pain, with meds as my only help, even though they barely help at all. My only outlet is gaming, which seems to lock my mind away from the pain as I play.

I want no pity. I'm interested in how many others on this forum may be disabled or knows someone who is disabled and is a gamer. Right now I believe that most with disabilities would be able to play this game and I feel it is important to keep it that way within reason.

I have a lot of friends who are gamers, and a few of them are disabled.

One of my best friends suffers from I.B.S. and i have another who i am close to who also suffers from RSD.

I hope you have been feeling well lately! I'm sorry to hear that you have RSD, it can be a very hard thing to deal with depending on the conditions.

I have had asthma for at least 65 of my 70 years, which restricts my activity--about 5 years ago my "lung age" was 105! I also have post-traumatic arthritis in my right ankle following a double compression fracture in a car accident back in 1999 and walk with a cane. I qualify for a hangtag for parking my car, but am a lot less disabled than many people, such as you. It is very good to have an absorbing game that does not require activity, especially if I am down with bronchitis.

I have chronic bronchitis also since childhood and absolutely empathize with you. Smoking actually keeps the bronchitis at bay, a doctor friend told me that nicotine is a bronchial dialator.

Inhalers never worked well for me and they freaked me out anyway, with all the fatal side effects that various ones cause. I don't really smoke much, too much of anything is bad for you and I'm more likely to get cancer from the electricity in my house, car exhaust, etc., as they are much higher on the carcinogenics list than tobacco, lol. I just use it medicinally the way my ancestors, the Native Americans did.

Barrier free User interfaces (UIs) are a really important thing, and I wonder if it will become an issue in computer science in the future. UIs will make a leap as gesture control, touch screens etc. evolve. Look at MS Kinect or Nintendo Wii: no chance to play if you have certain disabilities. Plus, physical skills become more important. I love the fact that you can be a nerd that has no talent in sports at all and be a great gamer anyway, but I fear that will come to an end regarding some classes of games.

Well, disabled gamers everywhere will be up in arms if that happens. The only reason you haven't really heard too much complaining from disabled gamers about the Wii or Kinect is because we know they... well... SUCK!

Definitely! PTSD is, in many cases, a disabling condition. I have several veteran friends with PTSD.

Dark savant, have you tried a real e-cig? I finally quit smoking tobacco about 4 weeks ago with an adjustable electronic cigarette, and don't even feel the need to smoke the real thing... Just a thought, if you're taking in nicotine medicinally, look into the real e-cigs... Still get the nicotine, but not the carcinogens...

I've thought about that. My problem with that at the moment is cost. E-cigs can be cheaper than regular cigarettes, but the ones I buy cost $1.50 a pack , and considering I smoke 1/2 pack a day, that's $15 for two months worth. Maybe if I ever get out of this fixed-income hole, I'll switch to E-sigs.
