The monster gets one move per round (6s), and I think one chance per round to hit you if you are adjacent to it. So if you rush it, chances are you get first hit. For almost all monsters, they do not move on diagonals, but you can. So if you rush on a diagonal your chances are even higher.

And yes, it seems that rushing at a monster improves chances to hit first. Haven't tried too much with diagonal attacks (since too often end up sliding around the monster, allowing the monster extra chance to then get 1st strike), but good to know.

Wondering if changing the 'move around obstacles' in preferences may affect diagonal-approach attacks? As in, make it harder to strike vs moving around/past the monster. Will experiment.

No. This has no effect on approaching a monster.
