In 1983 I was a pretty good programmer in BASIC and a couple other languages no one used anymore. What do I need to learn in order to make good contributions to andor's trail?

Hello.
I suggest you to start by reading
the contribution guide. It has all the pointers to the relevant sources or better, the information itself.
Long story short: code is in Java.
