I think it would be much easier to implement a fixed ferry than a player-controlled boat that can navigate rivers and lakes (something that's also been discussed). In fact I think I have a way to do it given the existing code using using the changing-map function. Will have to think that through some more...

I never said it was a player controlled boat. I said you pay someone to take you there. It would only work for places near the river. Gold prices can be used to make it comparable to the walk. Also you should be unable to use this method to get to any place you haven't already journeyed to the hard way first. Maybe you have to complete a quest to get a document granting permission to use the dock at the destination? Each destination would require it's own document which you can only get from the destination's town leader.

Fast travel in general has been ruled out, but boats have come up before and might be allowed if they are limited, and expensive.

How about a boat where you get half way, at which point you get attacked by river monsters. And over on the bank are bandits who are looking on with glee, knowing that you will either have to take your chances with the monsters, or them

Like LD, I was thinking just a ferry, to an island in a lake or to cross a river with no bridge. A quest for "payment" is s good possibility, perhaps as a service for an agent of the town on the other side?

Boarding the boat could be done like entering a building, jumping to a separate small map that represents below decks. Leaving the boat uses a door on the other side, which leads to the other dock. The player need never see the boat actually move.

I was thinking you go into a building, talk to someone, and select a location from his shop list. Then the screen fades to black. It fades back in and you are on the river bank closest to the town you selected. You don't ever have to see a boat at all. The locations in the shop list only appear if you've gotten permission from the town leader to dock there. As an added difficulty, you can set it to where you can't get permission until you've completed all the quests in that town.

The fade to black and reappear thing would require additional coding. I don't know how much.

I remember some posts about boat or ferry to Remgard, but don't find it. So I post here:

What about really steering the boat?

I think the main problem is that there is no info in the map which places the boat could go to.
Maybe boating could be realised as some kind of actor condition so that you can go only to places that are normally not possible. And normal land is forbidden to go. Just draw a boat at the position of our hero - er voilĂ .
You steer the boat like normal navigation easily on a lake or river.
In the same way like our hero, sea monsters or pirates could move and eventually attack. Nice ideas for new quests come to my mind...
And e.g. you might find a boat in Remgard and use it for return quickly. But this of course can not be used to get there first.

Some restrictions
- Bridges cannot be crossed under.
- Unpassable places (like trees) at the border must be handled. This can be solved, but not explained in a few words. Is it of interest?
- this actor condition must be fenced to water areas.

This way it should not be too difficult to enhance the map with boating info. What do you think?

i like the idea of just stepping on a "boat tile" and having it take you to another map,
just as if you were entering / exiting a typical doorway.

(maybe it would take you to a small island with a cave, or whatever)

no additional programming needed, just make a raft or boat tile to place on the map change tile (door / mapevent)

Exactly. Probably only one or two spots, and no long distances (Remgard to Feygard in one easy ride? Nuh uh)

Maybe even that. If the price is high enough! Seriously, we need some ways for higher level players to spend the gold they have, and disgustingly expensive boat rides could be one way.
