Sustenance helps immensely with survivability in early levels, when your build hasn't had time to develop. But why should you assume that it must remain an important part later on? Survive. Adapt. Learn how to make your build work in higher level areas with the resources you have available, and perhaps more importantly, how to judge when you're not ready for an unfamiliar area.

Sustenance is very useful even at high levels. You just need to back off, and stand in a corner somewhere.

I do use it occasionally between fights because 1 level of regeneration is so darn slow, but at earlier levels, popping some food right before combat can dramatically reduce or eliminate the need for potions during it - this is main use in my style of play. But at higher levels against mobs that can really hit for high damage, I don't expect sustenance to be what gets me through , but rather my build, my strategy, and having enough gold to have enough potions to survive big crit hits as needed.

I don't think any single thing is a solution to the HP problem. But high sustenance foods have their place. I would never create a build without Re:1, because then at least you can stand at some map edges and gradually heal. It is slow, and boring, but it will eventually get you there.

I agree - no one thing. High sustenance foods have uses - agree there, too. I'm arguing against the idea that increasingly harder areas mean that the game needs increasingly higher sustenance foods, as if that's the only or even best way to deal with those areas. Sometimes you have to come up with a different approach, not just the same comfortable one with higher numbers.

I agree. Things don't have to grow and improve as you advance in levels and advance in map difficulty.

I was wondering if the guy named gael that loves meat, and particularly snake meat couuld give us something special if we gave hime snake meat ? Like, a golden snake leather purse that is completely useless but shiny :D
(Of course, if made it wouldn't be a priority at all, and if not, well Andors Trail remains the best game I've ever played, tysm dev team)

Lack of different approaches is the real problem. In the game you can beat *monster stats* with your *own stats* only! There is no magic, no effective skills, no extra abilities, no party system where one can recruit specialists, so that leaves the player with MOAR GRINDING!!!

Consumables + unique wearable items + monsters dropping interesting goodies together help to break the monotony

You cannot continue to add tougher, powerful monsters on one hand while deny players any choice other than grinding for more experience points.

Don't see what approaches exist besides improving stats, and stats become tougher to improve as the gap for experience points in higher levels keeps increasing.

It is natural to keep adding extra items with enhanced features or upgrades as players climb the ladder of experienced points where monsters keep getting tougher. This is a thumb rule of every rpg. Don't understand why andors trail players should be denied the same.

Good points all round, tho I lean towards offering some type (even if expensive &/or hard to acquire) of significantly higher sustenance foods/drinks--not only to scale better, but to increase overall enjoyment of the game.

Grinding can be sorta fun--at least when there's a clear & achievable objective, but having to step back & wait time after time after time for round after round after round for HP to regen at higher levels (when you're needing not just 10 HP, but 100 or 200+ HP) diminishes the enjoyment..and a game is--at heart--meant to be fun, right? :)

Btw, would it not be organic + reasonable to have your char start out with Regen 1 ? -based on natural ability to heal slowly from wounds.

That wouldn't be much, but sufficient at low levels to avoid too much joy-sucking ennui..then skills & items could gradually (from level-building) ramp up one's Regen--along with using potions &/or food/drinks.

Osho,

I didn't mean that we should do nothing. Just that every single booster doesn't automatically have to be scaled.

For example, I think it's time to add better, but harder/expensive healing potions, as rescue items for those high-damage mobs.

On the other hand, I disagree that the sole alternative is more grinding. If my build wouldn't let me get to Sullengard after completing everything else in the game apart from grinding for L/E's (which bores me), even if at level 55ish or up - and I mean if it was impossible or nearly so, not just a challenge, then I would examine my build, look for ways to improve it, ask around for suggestions on how, either here or the Discord, and try starting a new build, rather than just grind somewhere I've done everything interesting already until I'm over-leveled enough to overcome my inefficient build.

My current character has a tough time getting to Sullengard in the low 50s, but I can get there. I used to always try to clear every map the first time through, both for the extra XP and to feel like I'm not on the verge of being overcome if I continue on that path. It means a lot of potions, but relatively little grinding. With the Sullengard snakes, I find I am adjusting my strategy, avoiding the majority of snakes while pursuing most of the bugs for the XP. I am not through all the Sullengard quests yet, so I'll see if I will be seeing enough by the time I'm done that I can be more aggressive by the time I'm returning to the Duleian Road for the last time (for now). I think I have a pretty efficient build, in terms of skills I have chosen and gear I have acquired, but if I was failing to get through, I would try to improve it further if I could.
