New Highscore Ideas / Discussion

It seems many people are interested in participating in highscore but the current system requires manual updating of forum signatures. This causes two problems:

- many players are not included into highscore scheme
- it requires manual update of stats

In one of the next version automatic sending (if chosen in the options) of statistical data (Exp, Gold, Stats) once per day to a server could be implemented. This allows for constanly updated statistics.

If history of this data is kept it could also be used for soem other purposes, e.g. to observe progress over time (Exp vs Time) for example.

The "high score" thread on here is just for fun. It is not a "global" high score.

I feel that this is the type of game that gets no real benefit from an online highscore table. Samuel does an excellent job with what we have currently.

If the game were an action game or a single dungeon roguelike then I could see where a highscore feature would make more sense.

I think an online highscore table (or a community function showing other players and their builds) would improve several issues with the current list.
  • automatic updating (no script is needed to be manually executed, no need of signature updates)
  • transparency (not everyone browses the forum, viewing them ingame would be nice)
  • completeness (the new list could show skills, items, quest states, etc / it doesn't depend on outdated signature entry's missing several items)
  • time (does take some time to get values and maintain the list / format used, etc.)
A problem would be the naming. Currently the forum name is used as identifier. We could generate an GUID for each game.
Oskar also mentioned he is afraid the needed internet permission for this feature would disturb some players.

True, I sometimes choose not to download a game or app because they seem to be asking for too many permissions. But perhaps if there was a note that the access was only for the high score reporting feature, and you were able to disable the feature if you didn't want the app to access the internet. Or perhaps it could be disabled by default. Then you could put a message in the game interface about how enabling the score reporting feature will allow the game to access the internet.

I don't know, but it sounds like a cool idea. I like the high scores list very much.

I think the way highscore is done through the forum is fine... I love the " no
Permissios required"... if AT goes online, may as well be PvP... would be
the only reason I see to have the game require a network connection... I also
believe network connection would raise lag issues with an otherwise, smooth
running game...such as... too many people online, ones location, weather,or just
a cheap phone, could hender a gamers experience.... at least this way players
can still compete for the best scores w/o having to put the game online...

I don't know if this is possible, but perhaps we could create a second application, like a plug-in, for Andor's trail which you have to download separate if you want to be on the highscore list. This would let the players who don't want to give their applications permissions unaffected.

If the internet connection is problem, it could be just an button like 'submit my character on highscore', and it will just send the informations when a user wants to (when he have acces to the internet from wifi for example)
