Pirates rule! :-p
Remember that being a pirate is more fun
Spending months at sea is not my idea of fun. Learning how to drop somebody to the ground 1000 different ways on the other hand is fun.
.. if you put this in this way, i need to say... using thousand and thousand days in training is not my idea of fun ... Couble hours of hard work, then back to funpart seems more reasonable
And by the way, IMO the ultimated self defence is;
Well a pirate never goes alone he always have load's o' matey' to help him a ninja is supposed to kill alone and I dont know many humans that would survive a bottle'o'pirate'rum in the head.

Ninjas are the original pirates. They would sail the seas around China and Japan, stealing, pillaging, and sabotaging ships for their commanding daimyos (like privateers). But, if their daimyo was conquered and they had no ninja clan to go back to, they would stay at sea fighting for their own survival and profit from stealing and pillaging any ship they happened upon.
Assuming that we're talking about european pirates and land based ninjas, honestly the ninja would win on flat ground... On a ship, the pirate would win... In port, I would still say the pirate would win...
