... I disagree, if you really want one - you need to pay the price. Just keep on grinding ... or buy some other nice rings like villain's ring.

I personally reach just under 4,000 small rocks before getting my ROLS, I know it can drive you crazy but it's really only there for players to kill time trying to get it. There is nothing in game you cannot compleate w/o the ring.
But trust me i know how you are feeling, I spent the good part of 6 months in that cave. (Since then i refuse to bring any of my new builds in there out of fear of loosing my mind)

last_pawn sits resting in the corner by the bed he's made from old imp leather wings. I'm not sure why I'm here any more, considering the legends I've heard about these rapiers I fear my sources are untrustworthy. But alas, I have plenty of imp wing pouches full to brimming with gems...
I think if I lose my mind I'll go take some imps with me, here we go, back to the grind!

my opinion:
tek and i have posted discussions about saving the game when you're surrounded by imps
(you leave them half dead so they are all one hit kills)
after saving it kill them & if you didn't loot it... reload and one shot them all again.
seriously, you can kill about 100 of them in 3 mins - if you are patient (tenacious) enough.
the right side of the bridge has 5 imps - so we "re-load hunt" there
[you may be aware of this, but reposting - just in case]
