Evaluate my character, moderately new player

Post by spuckupine »

Hi guys,

First, compliments on a great game! I don't play many RPGs, but this is a nice fit for me, the casual gamer (who would play more if time permitted).

Would like to get some thoughts on my progress as I figure I am approaching a critical point...

Playing on v0.6.12

Level 18
HP 74 (66)
Attack cost: 3 (4 minus 1), Max AP 10
AD 17-25 (9)
AC 161 (70)
C 17 (skill), x2, 13%
BC 33

Skills:
1x Weapon accuracy, 2x Corpse Eater, 1x Increased Fortitude

A few questions...
-What is critical hit skill vs effective critical chance?
-Any stat(s) I should improve or item(s) to chase after?
-What skill(s) to get next? Was thinking of Increased Fortitude due to getting it early and making the most of it
-Where is a good place to grind?
-Is it worth increasing critical stats? I'm kind of on the side of "you have to be able to hit the monster in order to kill it" so while criticals are nice, I'd rather be able to hit (and not miss) thus actually causing damage.

Welcom to the forums Spuckupine !
I'm allways glad when we get some fresh meat for the grinder. :-)

You have pretty nice build. Keep on the good work !
Hmm... about your question I'll try to help, but be warned I'm fan of crit hit builds, etc there might be some other "right" answers as well....

here:
What is critical hit skill vs effective critical chance?
--Critical hit skil is just a number like your attack chance.. Effective critical chance (ECC) is your % chance to get a critical hit.

Any stat(s) I should improve or item(s) to chase after?
--Keep on building AC. IMO a base AC of 200+ is needed... Tell me your current items and I can help you more about this on those

What skill(s) to get next? Was thinking of Increased Fortitude due to getting it early and making the most of it
--Combat speed when possible, Increased Fortitude when possible, and other skill points aim for cleave 1 or 2..

Where is a good place to grind?
--hmm lvl 18... probably flagstone prison (for exp and gold) or gargoyle cave (for the The Ring)

Is it worth increasing critical stats? I'm kind of on the side of "you have to be able to hit the monster in order to kill it" so while criticals are nice, I'd rather be able to hit (and not miss) thus actually causing damage.
--There are some tough monsters with hp 300+ ... IMO Increace critical is nice skill...
good hunting

I agree with Sarumar, but I also like critical hit builds.
A high AC definitely helps, but you can mostly increase that from regular level ups. I also agree on getting cleave but that's the only time I would use skill points on weapon accuracy and hard hit.

I have used skill points on More Criticals and have no regrets about it, but I would not use any on Better Criticals because the multiplier will get boosted when you increase your AD. Unless you don't want to level up too much, in which case it can help.

And definitely get combat speed as soon as you can.

Happy hunting!

Hello! I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice. Ive read some other similar posts, but they are from higher level players so dont necessarily apply to me. I am lvl 14 wearing leather cap, jewel of fallhaven, hardened leather shirt, troublemakers ring, polished ring of backstabbing, troublemakers gloves, and vacors boots. Destroying snakes, gargoyles, and corpses with a venomous dagger. (base stats will be in sig, i hope) I certainly havent been everywhere, and havent made it past the demon in flagstone basement yet. current quests are: search for andor (duh), lost treasures, ancient secrets, lost potion, path is clear, and flows through the veins. Any suggestions what i should focus on?

I would try the Gargoyle cave (Legendary item grinding) or finish grinding in Flagstone for the Flagstone's Pride. If you can make it in the Gargoyle Cave it is a great place to level even if you are not shooting for a RoLS. The trainers also drop health potions which will allow you to stay in there longer. I would stay there for a long time just collecting health potions and trying for a RoLS.

Give a man a fire and he will be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

hmm... IMO you should:
Grind money and exp in snake cave (meat is worth of lots of gold) and in Flagstone prison (nice exp gain and those dropped swords arw gold ). Then try to make run into Crosroads (starting in hometown one screen east an then couble screen ro north), there you can buy some really nice "villains" item.

Welcom to the forums Crossglens Pvt Eye !

and good hunting !

I know it might not seem like it, but us higher level players started off with new games too, so that's why we often offer advice. The venomous dagger is a critical hit weapon so you might want to consider getting a second polished ring of backstabbing, and villains leather armor. If you like critical hit builds and can't get through Flagstone Prison, the villains blade is a good store bought weapon. The prison its a good place to go but many of the monsters there are immune to critical hits, so you should also look into non critical gear.

After Flagstone I would try path is clear and flows through the veins.

If you want to level up a little between quests, here is a topic suggesting good areas based on your level

Where to go:
1) Snake caves for more meats and money
2) Flagstone Prison for more money and the Flagstone's Pride (crit sword)
3) Gargoyle Cave for a chance at the legendary Ring Of Lesser Shadow (usually i am pretty well equipped to hold my own in the Gargoyle caves around level 18-20)

Skill Points:
Get Increased Fortitude ASAP! It will add to your HP which means you can use your level up bonuses for AD, AC, and BC instead.

Combat speed: Getting this adds to your max AP but isn't as important if you have the wrong equipment. For example, if you have the Quick Strike Dagger (Attack Cost 2 with J.O.F.) adding the extra one isnt as important. It does come in handy if you happen to use items often during combat (like using potions or eating food w/ cost 5ap)

A side note from your friendly neighborhood Pyrizzle:
Crit builds are fantastic (most of mine are crit builds) but keep in mind when hunting for the ROLS that the NPCs that drop it are immune to critical hits and that a non-crit build will be more effective against them. =)

Good luck and happy hunting! -Pyrizzle
