Re: Villain's Ring Vs Polished Ring of Backstabbing
Interesting question. It prompted me to do a little math. So, for me (things of course may work out differently for others)
Leaving out the main hand weapon and both rings, I have AC 147%, AD 24-30. I also have one level of each of One handed Sword Proficiency and Dagger Proficiency.
I looked at 4 configurations: DotSP with 2 x PRoB, BSS with 2 x PRoB, DotSP with 2 x VR, BSS with 2 x VR (actually, I also looked at configurations with the Ring of the Protector, but that's another story). For each configuration I calculated the average damage per attempted strike, taking into account the chance of hitting, and the chance of a critical hit, for both crit susceptible monsters and crit immune monsters. These graphs show the average damage as a function of the monsters BC:

So the only time the PRoB is better is for monsters that are susceptible to critical hits, with a BC below about 115. If we take into account the fact that AT seems to round most numbers down to the nearest integer, the PRoB only has an advantage when the monster's BC is below about 50. Even then, the advantage is small. Using a weapon with lower CS that the DotSP (i.e. any other weapon) in the main hand will reduce even this small advantage.
So I voted for PRoB, but that will only be true for as long as it takes me to get to the crossroads and change my rings (although since I'm up by Remgard, that may be a while!)
BTW, is there a way to embed an image other than as a URL, or to hide the image in the attachment? The only way I see to embed an image in a post is to upload it, and then reference the URL. But then everyone gets to see the image twice, which is kind of irritating.

Re: Villain's Ring Vs Polished Ring of Backstabbing
The difference is small, especially if we take into account that the numbers are almost certainly rounded down to the nearest integer. So no reason to hurry
The relative advantage of one ring over the other will also depend on your CS without the rings. For me, that's 34 (I should have said that in my post above, because it's important). Once your CS get's to a certain point the effective critical chance does not increase much for a big increase in CS. With a CS of 34 my ECC is 21%, whereas if I equip 2 x PRoB, my CS goes up to 48, but my ECC only goes up to 25%. If your CS without the rings is lower then the PRoB will have a bigger benefit (don't know how much without running the math again though!).

What?Pyrizzle wrote:Villain's Ring has more AC (4%), less AD (-4 - -1), and no boost to critical damage
Polished Ring of Backstabbing has less AC (-4%), more AD (+4 - +1), and a CHS boost of 4
Villain's Ring: 25% AC, 3-6 AD, 4 HP
Polished Ring of Backstabbing: 21% AC, 4 AD, 7 Crit
Emphasis added to show AD comparison. Villain's Ring is better for any non-crit based build and even with crit (and non-immune monsters) the PRoB is barely better. Or course, the RoLS is far better than either of them so if I ever get one then I may no longer wield 2 VRs.
*EDIT* Antison's graphs are quite nice

Re: Villain's Ring Vs Polished Ring of Backstabbing
Among the choices given, I choose the PRoB.
But I prefer the Defender's ring over both.

Actually, I don't fight any more. I let the gods handle it. They love fighting. I get them to fight each other and leave us in peace. It's bad enough when humans start trouble.

Re: Villain's Ring Vs Polished Ring of Backstabbing
Why would you choose the Defender's ring over the Ring of the Protector (aside from price, anyway, which is rather different!)?

Defender's ring (BC: +11%, AC: -6%)
Ring of the protector (BC: +14%, AC: +20%, AD: +0-3, Max HP: +3 HP)
Ring of the Protector is amazing! Great stats!
