IMHO:
Since the Steel Sword is so finely balanced it would make it easier to weild, which should allow you to use one in each hand.

there will be so many changes with the new weapons & skills that this wont even matter. (not trying to be flippant)
with so many new ways to customize your character - you wont worry so much about how the existing weapons are classified.

(unless we are talking about Legendary / Extraordinary Gear - that MUST be discussed)

the BSS might get lower stats and be a long sword
or it might get higher stats and be two handed
it's too early to say - we don't have enough new weapons generated to "balance" the game properly.

and balance is huge!!!
(i'm not saying we have achieved it yet, but we strive for it)

You read my mind. 2handed, it should give more AD and cost less AP (since you are using both hands, you attack quicker) but you should only be allowed to use buckler class shields (anything larger does not work), or no shield, lowering BC and in some cases, DR. 1handed, it should be slower, deal less AD but could be used with a shield. This concept would require a lot of new commands or keys, namely one to remove shield, equip buckler if available and switch to 2h, and switch to 1h, remove buckler if worn and equip certain shield. Would need two buttons that are configurable.
Also, regarding my suggestion to add weapon training for different weapon types, smiting (2h weapons of all kinds) would affect the bastard sword only if used as a 2h, and slashing (1h swords) only when used onehanded. Interesting but I think, again (sorry) way too far ahead of current stats system, combat systen and UI.

Thy: All these are great suggestions! +1

Being able to use a bastard style sword with one hand or two and having each have it's own unique benefits gets a big +1 in my book. Very cool idea and that would lead to a lot of customization.

I don't think it should become even more powerful than the ElyR, but since it has "balanced" in the name, I also think the BSS should be one-handed.

So I think the ElyR should get a boost to make it worth being 2-handed. Its still a legendary item so even if its more powerful, its not like everyone will have one (going by how many on this board have one might be a distorted sample).

I agree on the BSS. Two handed should be slower. I picture something lighter than a typical medieval longsword, but heavier than a rapier.

Until or unless the ElyR becomes a quest item or boss drop, I really don't care if it is ever ”fixed”. A couple of times when I've needed to grind for gold or a skill point before I went further, and actually chose to grind in a L/E drop zone just in case, but I have no real interest in collecting them. Not even the RoL or RoLS,.which are as far as I can tell the only two worth having.

I do not see either why the ElyR would not be modified, but I trust Nyktos and wait for allthe upcoming changes. Maybe for 0.7.1 we have to rebalance a lot of weapons. Usually with big steps forward :-)

With every new update there is a change that comes with it. Wither you adjust to the new system (maybe stating over) or tough it out and continue on with the build you are going with, is always up to you.

The introduction of duel wielding and the use of new skills IMO is going to be the greatest change in Andor's Trail to date.

Who knows by the end we will have found new favorite weapons and might even forget about the Balanced Steel Sword entirely.
